History
The traditional farmhouse “Au Portaou” in the hamlet of Valcrouzès is located in the heart of the Cévennes National Park. It is part of the municipality of Saint-André-Capcèze, a village located in the Lozère (near Villefort). Patricia and Hans welcome you near the Gard and the Ardèche to a world in its natural state, near the source of the Cèze, the gorges of the Chassezac and the Mont Lozère. You will be charmed by this authentic Cévennes farmhouse with its interior courtyard, its old stone staircases, its terrace shaded by the vines and its outbuildings that remind us of the past. In this haven of nature, the lapping of the spring will make you discover romantic and soothing little corners. At “Au Portaou” you will enjoy a Mediterranean climate where serenity, calm and rest are guaranteed. The farmhouse has been restored in the Cévennes style, with chestnut ceilings and floors worked in the traditional style. The rooms predominate with their beautiful golden colour. You can stroll and rest between flowers, fruit trees and the murmurs of cicadas in our terraced gardens. The friendly evenings combined with our healthy and organic table d’hôtes will make you spend quality moments of life.

Rooms
Our rooms are individually furnished and decorated. They are equipped with private central heating and sanitary facilities.
Clèda
La Clèda is a two-storey room that was built in the old clède (the building where chestnuts were dried). On the first floor, you will find a double bed in the mezzanine.
The bathroom is equipped with a shower, sink and private toilet.
It’s a real love nest.
Bergerie
La Bergerie is a 2-storey room in a very old small independent house.
On the ground floor, you will find a small kitchenette with a wood stove and bathroom.
Upstairs is the bedroom with a double bed of 1.60 x 2m with antique and very romantic furniture.
La Bergerie can also be rented as an holiday cottage per week or per weekend.
Hortensia
Hortensia is a room arranged for 3 people with a private bathroom. The decoration shows the hydrangeas in different aspects (Lilac, purple, violet).
Ver à soie
Ver à soie (Silkworm room) is a room with a private bathroom and arranged in an old room where silkworms were grown. Reproductions of old photos. On this prosperous activity decorate the walls. A bed for 2 people awaits you in a green decoration.
Cottages
Our cottages are individually furnished and decorated. They are equipped with private central heating and sanitary facilities.
Bergerie
La Bergerie is a 2-storey room in a very old small independent house.
On the ground floor, you will find a small kitchenette with a wood stove and bathroom.
On the first floor is the bedroom with a double bed (1.60 x 2m) with antique furniture and very romantic. The independent terrace in the shade of a fig tree will make you spend beautiful moments.
Magnanerie
A gîte of 80m² will be offered in the oldest part of the Mas (1765) with an independent entrance. The terrace, shaded by a vine vine vine, is equipped with garden furniture.
On the ground floor, you will find a kitchen equipped with a dishwasher, a gas stove, an electric oven and a fridge. The dining room is spacious and the living room with a wood stove will give you a pleasant atmosphere.
There are 2 bedrooms on the upper floor:
Ver à soie: sleeps 2 with a double bed (1.40m x 2m) and a private shower room.
Hortensia: arranged for 3 persons with a double bed, a single bed and a private shower room. The decoration features hydrangeas in different patchwork patterns in lilac, purple and violet.

Breakfast and table d'hôtes with home-made, regional and organic products
Breakfast
Breakfast will be served under the vine arbour in good weather or in less favourable weather in the dining room. Patricia will present you her homemade jams with several kinds of breads made in the traditional way and baked on a stone. Delicious kinds of honey, coffee, tea, herbal teas, cocoa and fruit juices will complete your breakfast.
Dinner
Creativity will not stop there! Patricia will offer you at her table d’hôtes a kitchen with her garden products, tasty dishes from the Cévennes region but also specialities based on plants and vegetables from organic farming. It is also homemade aperitifs and syrups made from untreated flowers and fruits from our orchard. Vegetarian and gluten intolerant menus on request.
Theme holiday
Our cottages are individually furnished and decorated. They are equipped with private central heating and sanitary facilities.
Holiday for two
You want to celebrate an important date or simply to change your ideas. We propose this formula which will allow you to meet in pairs. The stay consists of 2 nights in a guest room with breakfast and 2 meals at the table d’hôtes.
This formula is possible according to your convenience and according to our availability. Come and relax in a quiet and serene place, by a good fireplace or in the shade of the vine.
Formule Pachtwork
This formula is a 2-day training course (± 4 hours per day) of Patchwork for one person. Patricia will be happy to share her passion for patchwork with you. This patchwork workshop is possible out of season, whether you are alone or in a group. Several possible techniques: hand-made patchwork, machine-made patchwork, hand quilting, etc…
The equipment is available on site, your fabric is to be brought.
Formule Châtaignes
At “Au Portaou” we combine the pleasure of harvesting, processing and tasting chestnuts with a stay of 2 nights and 2 meals for 2 people.
Special condition: In autumn, we need hands to collect and process chestnuts and chestnuts, clean the chestnut grove, collect, etc…
Formule Saint Valentin
Celebrate your Valentine’s Day at “Au Portaou” with 2 nights for 2 people including breakfast and table d’hôtes including 1 Valentine’s Day menu for 2 people.
